After the signing of the shameful spending bill last month, many were stating the obvious; that smugglers and every other stripe of illegal alien would now snatch up any kid they could and head to the border for the promise of immunity. And they were right.
DHS Secretary Kirstjen Nielsen painted a dark but accurate picture of the crisis at our southern border today as open border politicians did everything possible to obfuscate what even leftwing outlets are now being forced to report: our immigration system is at its breaking point.
More than 76,000 people were apprehended crossing illegally or without proper papers in February, the highest number of ‘encounters’ in any February of the last 12 years.
In addition to the increased number of illegals heading north, the types of people violating our sovereignty are changing, which is providing an even more difficult challenge for those protecting our country.
During a press conference on Tuesday, Brian Hastings, chief of operations at Border Control headquarters said: “Historically the U.S. Border Patrol has arrested 70 to 90% Mexican nationals; we could apply a consequence to that demographic; we could return them quickly to Mexico. Today 70% of all those we are arresting are from the northern triangle: Guatemala, El Salvador, and Honduras.”
“October 2018 marked the first time in our history that family units exceeded single adult apprehensions, and in February of 2019 family units and unaccompanied children accounted for 65% of all Border Patrol apprehensions,” Hastings continued.
“So without a consequence, without being able to deliver a consequence to these individuals for illegally crossing our borders, the Border Patrol has no reason to expect that this trend will decrease; in fact, we believe it will increase. It’s well known at this time that adults with children will not be detained during the immigration proceedings for illegal entry; the word of mouth in social media quickly gets back to those in the northern triangle countries that if you bring a child, you will be successful. From April 2018 through February 2019, we’ve had almost 2,400 fraudulent claims of families. Of those fraudulent claims, some are folks who have claimed they are under 18 and they’re not; others have actually been fraudulent familial claims.”
I suppose it was a small price to pay to avoid the declining approval ratings that would come from a zero tolerance policy and a prolonged government shutdown.
Secretary Nielsen continued today with numbers that should alarm every American, even Jared and Ivanka:
“Over 60% of the current flow are family units and unaccompanied alien children. And 60% are non-Mexican. Because of outdated laws, misguided court decisions, and a massive backlog of cases, we are often forced to release these groups into the United States and we have virtually no hope of removing them in the future.”
And boy, don’t they know it:
“More importantly, our ability to help those truly in need is severely limited. The vast majority of these individuals are from Central America, while many of them initially claim asylum and are let into the United States, only one in ten are ultimately granted asylum by an immigration judge. Unfortunately, when it comes time to remove the other 90% they have often disappeared into the interior of our country.”
Nielsen continued with what anyone with two braincells to rub together should have known already:
“Smugglers and traffickers have caught on that the outdated laws, lack of resources, and bad court decisions effectively give them a free ticket into America. Information about the weaknesses in our system has spread quickly in Central America, in fact, they are advertised. And our booming economy under President Trump has made the dangerous journey even more attractive to migrants.”
She finished with one final, sober declaration”
“Of great concern to me is that the children are being used as pawns to get into our country. We have encountered recycling rings, where innocent young people are used multiple times to help aliens gain illegal entry. As a nation, we simply cannot stand for this.”
Yet we do, and will continue.
The Paul Ryan/Jared Kushner immigration strategy is an unmitigated disaster. And Trump’s acceptance of it for two straight years is the greatest failure of his presidency. There is no amount of lipstick that can make that pig look good.
Since January 2017, we have fully funded every single Democrat agenda item while accepting mere crumbs for the president’s chief campaign promise; a promise he inexplicably delegated to the Swamp. But have no fear — Jared got to release felony drug dealers all over our country while incentivizing lots more to come from other countries.
The first time Ivanka came to complain about “children in cages,” PDT ended his zero tolerance policy. As soon as the government shutdown became a political liability, he signed a monstrosity of an immigration bill that will ruin our country for years to come. And then, last weekend at CPAC, he stood before his supporters and admitted to staying in the White House over the holidays as a political stunt to assuage his base, as if the last two spending bills hadn’t spat in our faces forcefully enough.
We may or may not win the court battle for the emergency declaration. It’s about 50/50 at this point. But assuming we do, the extra bit of wall won’t cure our immigration ills. Our laws have been set up in a way as to make physical security useless, and those looking to exploit us know it.
We won’t stop the influx of drugs, crime and cheap labor wage suppression until we get people in DC who care more about our country than their approval numbers and/or support from the big business lobby. And with Jared Kushner now working with the George W. Bush Center to formulate our immigration policy moving forward, I can’t say I’m optimistic we’ll see that anytime soon. I hold out hope for President Trump and pray for him every night. But the evidence is mountainous at this point — he cares far more about what his base thinks he’s doing than what is actually being done.
And it’s a damn shame.
